In the latest cricket news, Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has offered his perspective on the Test cricket future of star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, stating that Maxwell doesn't currently deserve a spot in the Test squad. Despite being a pivotal part of Australia's successful World Cup campaign, Maxwell was not included in the team for the ongoing Test series against Pakistan.

Ponting emphasized the significance of accumulating substantial first-class runs before earning a Test opportunity, asserting, "No one deserves a chance unless you’ve got a truckload of first-class runs behind you. I’m a no, he doesn’t deserve it. But if he gets a chance to go back and make some first-class runs, then he can force his way back in."
Maxwell, who last played a Test for Australia in 2017, has participated in only seven Test matches, accumulating 339 runs in total. Maxwell is yet to crack the red ball code but has turned match prediction in favour of Australia in yellow jersey.

In response to his exclusion, Maxwell expressed understanding of the competitive nature of the current Test side, acknowledging Australia's status as the defending champions of the World Test Championship. He mentioned, "I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025."

While recognizing the limited opportunities in Test matches at home, Maxwell remains optimistic about potentially filling a crucial role during future sub-continent tours.
"I’m quite understanding the circumstances of the current side. They’re playing some really good cricket, they’re World Test champions. I don’t think there’s another sub-continent tour until early 2025," Maxwell told SEN Radio.

"So, I’ll keep trying to plug away and hopefully get an opportunity at that stage. There’s not a lot of spots up for grabs as far as Tests at home, but I know that when it does come to a sub-continent tour, I can be a real viable option to hopefully fill a role in that side," Maxwell added.
